Dear Marjorie,
It started as a very happy pregnancy.
Peggy Young was expecting her third child and working as a UPS driver in Landover, Maryland. Peggy had worked there for 10 years, and she was eager to keep working during her pregnancy. Her family needed the income, and she needed the health benefits. Her midwife recommended that she avoid heavy lifting, but her regular job rarely required it, and in any case, UPS routinely provided light duty to employees with disabilities, on-the-job injuries, and other medical conditions who needed it.
But her employers refused to let Peggy do her regular job — and refused to provide light duty. Instead, they told her she was too much of a liability — and that she couldn’t come back to work until she was no longer pregnant. For the last six months of her pregnancy, Peggy was forced to go without pay — and she lost her health insurance, too. No one willing and able to work should be forced off the job because she is pregnant. But that’s exactly what happens to many women like Peggy.
We have until midnight tomorrow to raise another $2,785 to help us fight for women facing challenges in the workplace and beyond. Please click here to chip in $10 or more.
Some pregnant workers need temporary changes in their job duties. But employers often refuse to make even the smallest accommodations — even when they make adjustments for other employees who have temporary disabilities or injuries. As a result, women like Peggy are pushed off the job because they are pregnant.
As a result, too many pregnant women are losing income or being fired at the moment they can least afford it.
Together, we can stop employers who use pregnancy as an excuse to push women out of work.
Click here to contribute $10 or more now to help us meet our goal before midnight Thursday.
Thanks again for your work in support of women and families.
Sincerely,
Emily J. Martin Vice President and General Counsel National Women's Law Center
